What Type of Rocks Are Decorative Rocks?

Decorative rocks can add a unique and visually appealing look to the landscape around your home. They come in a variety of different shapes, colors, and sizes and can add color, contrast, and practicality to any outdoor space.

Still, with so many different options to consider, so what are the most common types of rocks that can be used as decorative rocks and what are they used for?

Aggregates

Aggregates are some of the most popular types of decorative rocks used in landscaping. They’re typically a blend of different materials like crushed stone, gravel, and sand, and they come in various sizes and a wide variety of colors including red, blue, black, white, and brown.

Aggregates are commonly used for walkways, driveways, and other high-traffic areas and the fact that they are a combination of different materials gives them a unique texture that can complement any landscape.

Pea Gravel

Pea gravel is small, and smooth and also comes in a variety of different colors including white, gray, and beige. It has a variety of decorative uses and is commonly used to cover garden beds and create walkways.

Lava Rock

Lava rock is another popular type of decorative rock. As the name implies, lava rock is formed as lava cools and solidifies, giving it a unique texture and striking red, black, and gray colors. Lava rock is most commonly used to accent water features like ponds and waterfalls but they also work well as a ground cover in garden beds and around trees and shrubs.

River Rocks

River rocks are another popular choice when it comes to decorative rocks. Made smooth by endless exposure to flowing water, they also come in a variety of colors including red, tan, and gray. Like lava rocks, river rocks are also commonly used in water features and can be used to create borders around flower beds and walkways.

Boulders

Not all decorative rocks are small and sometimes a large boulder can be the perfect addition to any landscape. Often used to create a more natural-looking landscape and again, like most decorative rocks, they come in a variety of different shapes, colors, and sizes.

Sandstone

Another type of decorative rock commonly used in landscaping is sandstone. Sandstone is usually red, yellow, or brown in color and it’s great for adding a warm, earthy feel to your outdoor space. Sandstone’s strength and durability also make it ideal for building retaining walls, walkways, and borders.

Limestone

Limestone is also commonly used as a decorative rock that comes in various shades of white, beige, and gray. Using limestone is an excellent way to add a classic touch to the landscape around your home and like sandstone, its strength, and durability make it a great option for retaining walls and walkways.

Flagstone

Flagstone is a particularly unique type of decorative rock due to its thin and flat shape which makes it an awesome material for building natural-looking patios, walls, and walkways. Flagstone also comes in a range of different colors including red, gray, and beige, and can be cut into customizable shapes allowing you to create any pattern you want.
